Book Review “The Maze Runner” by James Dashner

Summary from Goodreads:

If you ain’t scared, you ain’t human.

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his name. He’s surrounded by strangers—boys whose memories are also gone.

Nice to meet ya, shank. Welcome to the Glade.

Outside the towering stone walls that surround the Glade is a limitless, ever-changing maze. It’s the only way out—and no one’s ever made it through alive.

Everything is going to change.

Then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And the message she delivers is terrifying.

Remember. Survive. Run.

This is the first book I read aloud to my husband in an attempt to lure him into the fantastic realm of fantasy and science fiction. It worked! Every night while lying in bed I would plan to read only one chapter and we always ended up reading more. He was hooked. I’ve been reading to him ever since.

This is a perfect book to hook a man/boy and pull him into the world of imagination. Especially since the protagonist is male. Which let’s be honest, rarely happens.

With it’s colorful language and slang, the tone of the book is both humorous and serious. It’s extremely relatable to guys as well as girls. The unique characters and setting trap the reader almost instantly.

The Maze is a clever mystery. It immediately draws the readers attention and curiosity. The society these young men have formed is equally fascinating. Each person has their place to keep things functional. It’s an interesting mix up from the usual confusion and chaos of most dystopian novels.

When wicked is brought into the story, it adds even more intrigue and mystery. I was turning pages so fast I’m surprised the book didn’t catch on fire from the friction.

I finished the book in record time. Just under two hours.

In conclusion,

The writing is fantastic. The pace is perfect. The characters are unique and memorable. The setting is mesmerizing and mysterious. The plot is perfectly orchestrated.

I give this book the full 5 stars.
